February is here – red, pink and purple have been filling the stores for weeks – Flowers, chocolates and stuffed animals. All examples of how we express our feelings of love and affection for those around us.
Many times when we think about “heart”, we think in terms of love, joy, maybe even sadness or loss. Terms of compassion and gratitude also come to mind, and we will get to all of those as the month goes on….
However, today, let’s talk about what everyone (almost everyone), has on there mind! Yes, the Super Bowl!!
We can speak about the heart for hours when talking about the hard work of football: skills, practice, training, and endurance are just a few of the aspects of what it takes to get to the Super Bowl – but all could not be accomplished without a tremendous amount of heart. Heart for personal best, heart for being a great teammate, heart for competition and heart for the respect of the game and what it entails to play in the arena at that level.
Bill Belichick, a great coach, and leader understands the meaning of heart and asks four things of his team every day –
- Do your job
- Be attentive
- Pay attention to details
- Put the team first
In order to fulfill any of those requirements, we need to use what our heart allows us – desire, mindfulness, and openness to what is going on around us.
We can take those four simple, but not always easy tasks, and apply them to our own lives every day – post them on your mirror or in your date book.
- Think of your attitude towards how you do your job.
- Be mindful of how attentive you are to those around you.
- Pay attention to the details (because we know if you take care of the details, the big things take care of themselves).
- Think in terms of considering the well being of those around you, before only considering yourself.
Whether you are into football or not, or whether your team has made it the Super Bowl or not, these are simple life lessons we can all benefit from.
So, enjoy the day and have fun!
